Founding opportunity

What ‘founding member’ means here

Right now, Solarpunk Builders Co‑op is not yet a registered entity. It’s just an idea and a plan, with one person organising and a bunch of conversations happening.

A founding member is someone who:

  • Commits early, before the co‑op is fully formed.
  • Helps shape the rules, roles, and profit‑sharing model.
  • Gets more say in how the co‑op is set up and where it goes first.
  • Takes on more uncertainty than someone joining later.

You’re not just joining a business. You’re helping build the business itself.

What we’re aiming to do

Our plan:

  • Start with standalone homes in Darwin and Palmerston, then move into townhouses and property development as the crew and capacity grow.
  • Combine our skills so we can take on bigger, more profitable developments than most of us could do on our own.
  • Focus on repeatable concrete formwork to bring costs down while maintaining quality.
  • Build cyclone‑ready, termite‑resistant, fire‑resistant homes that last generations and suit the Top End climate.
  • Keep ownership and profits local, with the crew on the tools owning the business.

This is a practical, money‑making venture, not a hobby project or a statement. We want to build beautiful, high‑quality spaces and make them affordable, while earning a good living from doing it properly.

Who we’re looking for

We’re recruiting founding members across the key trades and roles needed to run residential projects from slab to handover. Priority roles include:

  • Licensed builder
  • Accountant / bookkeeper
  • Electrician
  • Plumber
  • Concrete form workers
  • Concreter / floor finisher (polishing)
  • Stainless steel installer / metal joiner
  • Precast / concrete erection crew
  • Painter / protective coatings
  • Glazier
  • Landscaper / irrigation specialist
  • All‑rounders and other trades

You don’t need to know everything about co‑ops already. You do need to:

  • Be solid at your trade or role.
  • Be reliable, honest, and easy to work with.
  • Be open to having a say in how the business runs.

If you’re in or around Darwin/Palmerston and you’re sick of being treated as disposable labour, you’re exactly who we’re after.

What’s expected of founding members

Being a founding member means more than just working on jobs. Expect to:

  • Commit time – beyond normal work hours, to help set up the co‑op (meetings, planning, rules, systems).
  • Commit skills – use your expertise to get the business running (estimating, safety, finance, site setup, etc.).
  • Take responsibility – own problems and solutions, not just wait for instructions.
  • Show up – attend formation meetings and early general meetings, and participate in decisions.
  • Invest something – most co‑ops require members to buy a membership share. The exact amount and payment options are still to be decided by the founding group, but expect some financial commitment to show you’re in for the long term.

This isn’t a side hustle. It’s a serious commitment to building a real business together.

Risks and rewards

Risks

  • No guarantees – there’s no guarantee the co‑op will succeed, or that we’ll always have full work.
  • Early‑stage uncertainty – roles, rules, and profit‑sharing are still being worked out. Things will change as we learn.
  • More responsibility – you can’t just blame “management”. As a member, you are part of management.
  • Possible tight periods – like any construction business, there will be slow times, cash‑flow pressure, and tough decisions.

If you need absolute certainty and hate ambiguity, this isn’t the right move.

Rewards

  • Real ownership – you’re not just labour. You own a piece of the business and have a vote.
  • Profit share – on top of market‑rate pay for your role, you share in the surplus according to the rules.
  • Better job security – co‑ops are more likely to adjust hours before cutting people in a downturn, and ramp back up faster when work returns.
  • Control over how we build – the crew decides how to work smarter, because when the job runs better, everyone benefits.
  • Building something lasting – high‑quality, affordable homes in the Top End, with local jobs and local skills.

You’re trading some certainty and simplicity for more control, more upside, and more security over the long term.

Is this you?

This founding member opportunity is for you if:

  • You live in or around Darwin/Palmerston.
  • You work in construction or a related role (trades, estimating, safety, finance, etc.).
  • You’re good at what you do and want more control and ownership.
  • You’re okay with early‑stage uncertainty in exchange for a real stake in the business.
  • You want to build high‑quality, affordable homes that suit the Top End climate.

It’s probably not for you if:

  • You just want a normal job with no involvement in business decisions.
  • You’re not willing to commit time beyond normal work hours to help set things up.
  • You’re only interested in short‑term cash, not building something over years.

How the process will work

Exact steps can be changed by the founding group, but a rough path is:

  1. Initial contact – you fill in the form or book a call to tell us about your trade, experience, and interest.
  2. Intro chat – a 15–30 minute call or meet‑up to see if this makes sense for both sides.
  3. Info session / group meeting – a short session (online or in person) where we explain the model, answer questions, and hear what people want.
  4. Expression of interest – if you’re keen, you submit a bit more detail about your skills, availability, and what you’re looking for.
  5. Formation meetings – a small core group meets to work out rules, roles, share structure, and initial plan.
  6. Commitment – founding members agree to the rules, buy their membership share (once set), and start working on early jobs and setup tasks.
  7. Registration and trading – once we have enough committed members and a plan, we register the co‑op and start taking on jobs under the co‑op name.

You don’t have to know all this now. The key is: if you’re serious, we’ll walk through each step carefully.

What you’ll get out of this

As a founding member, you can expect:

  • Market‑rate pay for your role on jobs, just like any other construction company.
  • A say in key decisions: what jobs we chase, how we structure work, how profits are shared.
  • A share of profits according to the co‑op’s rules, based on your contribution.
  • More control over your work: input into design, methods, sequencing, safety, and quality standards.
  • A chance to build something lasting: a local, worker‑owned business that can grow and provide steady work for years.

If we do this right, in a few years’ time you’ll be able to point to homes and developments across Darwin and say, “We built that, we own that, and we run that.”

Next steps

If this sounds like something you’d want to be part of:

  • Fill in the contact form with your details, trade/role, and why you’re interested.
  • Or book a short intro call using the link on that page to talk it through.

We’ll get back to you, answer your questions, and if it looks like a fit, invite you to an info session and the next formation meeting.

This won’t work without a solid core of people who are serious about owning and running the business together. If that’s you, let’s talk.
