Help build a worker-owned construction business in Darwin

What we’re establishing

Solarpunk Builders Co-op is a proposed worker-owned construction business for greater Darwin. Founding members will shape its business model, rules, systems, and priorities.

Construction workers often face insecure workloads, squeezed margins, poor trade coordination and little say in the business. Worker ownership won’t remove construction risk, but it can give members more control over working conditions, quality, decisions and how surplus is shared.

What is a worker co-op?

A worker co-op is a business owned and controlled by its workers. Each member has one vote, regardless of their financial contribution.

After costs, reserves, and reinvestment, available surplus is shared under agreed rules, usually based on members’ contribution.

How we want to build

We plan to start with standalone homes in greater Darwin, then expand into townhouses and property development when our crew, systems and finances can support it. Our approach:

• Repeatable concrete formwork, modular designs and common details to reduce costs without sacrificing quality.
• Solar and batteries, rainwater storage, edible gardens and food storage to reduce household bills and improve energy, water and food security.
• Durable, fire-conscious, termite-resistant, moisture-managed construction using non-toxic, low-maintenance materials.

We’ll refine a small range of tested designs and methods rather than start from scratch on every build.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for people in greater Darwin who want to help establish and actively own the business – not just work on its projects.

You don’t need to commit yet. Start with a conversation about your skills, what you could contribute, and what membership involves.

Ownership brings more say and a share of the upside, but also business responsibilities. If you prefer to focus only on your job, a conventional employee role may suit you better.
