Help build a worker-owned construction business in Darwin

What we’re establishing

Solarpunk Builders Co-op is a proposed worker-owned construction business for the greater Darwin region. The people who join during this stage will help shape the business model, rules, systems, and priorities. We aim to build the co-op around safety, quality, fairness, local capability, honest communication, and shared responsibility.

Many workers experience insecure workloads, limited influence over decisions, pressure on margins, poor communication between trades and little connection between the people who build a project and the value created by it.

A worker-owned business is one possible response. It would not remove the difficulty or risk of construction, but it could give members more control over working conditions, quality, business decisions, and the distribution of future surpluses.

What does ‘Solarpunk’ mean?

Solarpunk is shorthand for a practical, resilient, and fair future. In our context, “solar” refers to low-energy homes, renewable energy, water security, food security, thermal performance, and ecological design. “Punk” refers to local ownership, cooperative practices, repairability, experimentation, and challenging wasteful short-term development.

• Low‑energy, climate‑responsive homes that handle heat, humidity, and cyclones, and are designed specifically for the Top End rather than copied from somewhere else.
• Cooperative business practices where the crew owns the business, makes key decisions, and shares the upside.
• Using local materials, skills, and solutions wherever possible, and keeping profits and capabilities in our community.
• Lowering the cost of living through onsite renewable energy, water integration, and edible gardens to reduce household bills over time.
• Efficient use and reuse of materials, with an eye on repairability, adaptability, and long service life.
• A positive, practical vision of the future. Neither apocalyptic nor utopian, just a clear bet that we can build better homes and run a better business that serves the local community.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for people in the greater Darwin region who may want to become active founding members of a worker-owned construction business. You do not need to be certain that you will join. You do need to be willing to have an initial conversation, explain what you could contribute, and consider the practical requirements. Priority roles include:

• Licensed builder
• Accountant / bookkeeper
• Electrician
• Plumber
• Concrete form worker
• Concreter / floor finisher (polishing)
• Draftsperson / architect
• Stainless steel installer / metal joiner
• Precast / tilt-up concrete erection crew
• Painter / protective coating
• Glazier / door and window installer
• Landscaper / irrigation specialist
• Real estate agent
• All‑rounders and other trades

The first stage is to establish a small, reliable founding crew and develop the systems needed to operate professionally. This includes agreeing on the legal structure, business plan, member requirements, co-op rules, construction methods, pricing strategies, roles, governance processes, and funding arrangements.

How we want to build

We intend to begin with a narrow, manageable scope and expand only when the crew, systems, and finances can support it. Our plan is to start with standalone homes in the greater Darwin region, then move into townhouses and property development as the crew and capacity grow. The aim is to:

• Focus on repeatable concrete formwork, modular designs, efficient detailing, and common elements to bring costs down while maintaining quality.
• Integrate solar power and batteries, rainwater capture and storage, and edible gardens with extra food storage areas to increase energy, water, and food security while reducing household bills.
• Design homes with durable, fire-conscious, termite-resistant, moisture-managed construction details, that are non‑toxic, low maintenance, and built to last.

The aim is not to design every home from scratch and repeat the same mistakes. We want to develop a small number of well-tested designs, details, and construction methods that improve with use.
